How to Handle It
When the check engine light comes on, it can be easy to ignore at first glance, as it doesn’t provide you with much information. But although the warning signal is vague, there are a few things you can do to determine the severity of the issue and what may have caused it. The next time you see the check engine light in your BMW, make sure you pay attention to these indicators!
What Color is The Light?
When your BMW’s check engine light comes on, the first thing you need to check is its color, as it will give you an idea of the problem’s severity.
If the engine light is amber, there’s a minor issue going on in your vehicle. There can be a variety of issues that cause this, but none of them will offer a noticeable difference in the way your BMW performs. Although your vehicle is fine for the time being, we recommend service at your convenience to ensure the issue doesn’t worsen. If you see a red engine light, that indicates a major problem is going on. At this point, it is not safe to drive your vehicle and doing so will only cause additional damage. We recommend service as soon as possible to prevent serious damage.
If you happen to see an engine light that is half filled, that means the engine has gone into limp mode. This mode helps prevent permanent damage to the engine and allows you to get somewhere safe. It’s best to stop driving as soon as you see this!
Check The Gas Cap
If your BMW has an amber check engine light, the first thing you need to check is the gas cap. A loose gas cap is a common cause for the warning signal and can cause you to lose additional fuel to evaporation. Prior to your next drive, make sure the gas cap is either tightened or replaced. Once done, drive for a few miles and see how your BMW’s computer system responds to your adjustment. If the light hasn’t shut off, something else is going on and you’ll need professional diagnostic equipment to determine the cause.
